It is much easier to peel the butternut squash before cutting it in half using a serrated potato peeler. And when thin slicing the partially cooked squash, simply leave about a quarter to half inch one one side rather than trying to leave a little unsliced at the bottom.

Shout out to Fresno? Obviously you've never been there. Yuck.

Full disclosure, I was born there.

"The hasselback part... of... the hasselbacking.."

Me, out loud, unable to help myself: you mean the hasselbacking part of the hasselback?

Hasselback is named after the restaurant Hasselbacken that opened 1853 that made the potatoes that way. And what it means is the hill with common hazels.

Couldn't you use the same skewers to hold the squash together if you go all the way through?

Pretty sure the skewer trick works better with a flat-edged knife rather than a curved one...

To cut it in half, baton the knife through. I use a nightstick. If your knife won’t hold up to being batoned, get another knife.
