Chocolate Expert Guesses Cheap vs. Expensive Chocolate | Price Points | Epicurious

  • In this episode of 'Price Points', Epicurious challenges chocolate expert Amy Guittard of Guittard Chocolate Company to guess which chocolate is more expensive. Guittard breaks down baking chips (aka chocolate chips), white chocolate, dark chocolate, and cocoa powder. For each type, the connoisseur looks at and taste tests each chocolate before guessing which chocolate costs more. Once the prices are revealed, Guittard explains why a specific chocolate costs more and dives into specifics on how each chocolate is prepared.

The desire to want to find how chocolate was original made, where the products come from, what makes the taste of each unique cocoa bean unique. You dont become an expert just by eating chocolate.

                                                                        I come from a country that's one of the most important cacao producers, I've been to quite a few cacao farms and had their raw product (almost a 100% chocolate in an unrefined sugarless bar), farms who export their product to big companies and, not only what the farmers are paid for is criminally low (the providers of a certain brand I don't want to name, for instance, are paid $80 _a full sack of cacao beans_ so that the company sells 2 freaking ounces of chocolate for more than 300 USD), but the farmer's access to things like a market or a hospital is something you wouldn't imagine until you live it. Sure, the final expensive product in this video goes through processes that involves expensive machinery, but still, seeing the quality of life of the families where this cacao comes from just makes me bitter, I can't pinpoint why.
